2012 National Year of Reading

June theme : Dream

Do you dream when you read, or does your reading inspire your dreams (or even your nightmares).  Reading magical realism or fantasy titles is a way to explore other people’s dream creations.

Do you read accounts of other people’s dreams and their interpretation? Do inspiring accounts of real life successes help you dream about the possibilities in your own life?

Does reading help you pursue your dreams?

A few other reading suggestions:

True spirit: the Aussie girl who took on the world / Jessica Watson  (Biography 910.41092 WAT)

True spirit : the Aussie girl who took on the world / Jessica Watson

Be inspired by the true life story of Jessica Watson. “The story of a remarkable Australian girl who followed her dream and conquered the world. There is something different about adventurers; about the way their minds work. They look at the world as a place of challenges and though they know what fear is, they refuse to be hindered by it … Jessica Watson is a dreamer who dares to do.” (Publisher’s website)

Dreamhunter / Elizabeth Knox  (F KNO)

Set in a world where people can enter ‘The Place’, a place where dreams can be bought and sold to sleeping customers. The main character is fifteen year old, Laura, who belongs to a first family of dream hunting and is training to become a dreamhunter. When her father mysteriously disappears, many questions about the dream-hunting phenomenon emerge and Laura is left with a mysterious mission. A compelling, intricate fantasy with complex characters. Dreamhunter will appeal to readers who enjoy fantasy set in the real world.

Gossamer / Lois Lowry  (F LOW)

This is a moving and thoughtful novel about an invisible spirit known as Little One, who bestows dreams to people as they sleep, and a young foster child who suffers nightmares of his father’s vicious abuse (by renegade dream-givers who inflict nightmares on their victims). Under the tutelage of another dream giver, Thin Elderly, Little One is able to gradually give healing dreams, restoring the boy’s feelings of love and happiness and releasing the anger and bitterness from the boy’s sad past. Readers will enjoy the rich descriptive prose and the fascinating parallel world of this haunting story.
